I hit the point in my revision yesterday where things get rough and most of my comments to myself are something along the lines of barf, BARF, OMG BARF. This is what I profess to like about revision, though, having that barfy, skeletal framework to clean up and floof out. I remember when I was drafting these sections that I was rushing, and I wanted the project to be done. Previous me should’ve chilled out and slowed down and trusted the process, but at least she gave me the skeleton. Now to just get these last two sections right and not barf-worthy, and then do one more revision, and I’ll feel pretty good about life in general. #amwriting #amrevising #comeonpreviousme

What’s scarier—the spookiest neighborhood in Raleigh or the home haircut I tried to give the littlest? (He looked like Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber. Bless Supercuts for fixing it.) It was a no-school day and just perfect weather for one of our favorite parks. *And* AT&T showed up to bury the internet cable which was very interesting and also hooray, no more mowed-over internet!

One of the things I’ve loved most about launching my book is talking with book clubs, so I could not be more excited that The Baddest Girl on the Planet was named one of the National Women’s Book Association’s Great Group Reads for 2021. And oh my gosh, you should see the book club kit @blairpublisher worked up! The littlest and I went to one of my favorite park

The littlest and I went to one of my favorite parks today, a magical, charming, surprising little spot with mythical creatures and ivy-twined arches and rainbow mist. Little Guy has started pretend play recently, and it’s so much fun to hear him tell stories about how the lion-faced-squirrel got turned into a statue, and to watch him steal pickles off the dragon’s back and blame it on a bandit. It reminded me of getting into a really good flow of writing, when you just sort of let go and play and see what happens next. Getting to that point isn’t easy (I spent my entire work time on Tuesday too tired to do much of anything) but when it does happen, hooray, grown up play!

During particularly self-doubt-ish periods of my MFA, I’d hold this daydream in my mind of going back to my undergrad college as a published author, talking with students, getting to be the person I’d looked up to when authors visited when I was there. Today, it happened. And while it wasn’t a physical homecoming (thanks, Delta variant, you pile of crap), I loved every minute of talking with these Muskies and Dr. Varley, my mentor. I was telling them that it occurred to me this morning that Baddest Girl is the direct descendent of a setting prompt in Dr. Varley’s Intro to Creative Writing class. So funny to think about how this project that I spent years on sprang to life out of a homework assignment to write a descriptive paragraph! Anyone out there have interesting genesis stories for their current projects?
